Oh my goodness, I am such a proud mum today. As many of you who know my story will have gathered, I have been a single mum for a good many years after my divorce.

The one thing I was determined to do was to make sure my kids followed their passion. I could not afford private education or even extra tuition, but what I could do was to help them to find ways of expressing themselves fully so that when they grew into adults, they could do the work they loved and really feel proud of their achievements.

And they have. For which I am so grateful.

And today is all about icing on the cake. My son Alex has been nominated for the Student Oscars in Los Angeles. Out of 32 countries and 52 entries, his film, The Miserables, which he wrote and produced, is in the Final Five and up for either a Bronze, Silver or Gold award. This means that on May 25th we will find out if he is in one of those categories, though we won’t know which one, and he will fly out to Beverley Hills to receive his award.

The fact that he has even been nominated is extraordinary and I couldn’t be more proud.

Its really hard when divorce hits home and you begin contemplating how you’ll bring up your children to be the best that they can be, given the emotional trauma and upheaval they are bound to experience as a result of their parent’s split. If you are in this situation, you’ll know what I mean.

I truly believe that if you allow them to follow their dreams and help them to shape those dreams into a tangible route for their future, you will have done equally as well, if not even better than most parents out there, whether together in one unit or as a split family.
