Sometimes, just sometimes, we yearn for what was and how it might be again – if only. Each day I hear people say they want to rebuild their romance and re-experince what they once both felt for each other. Where does it go? Does it get buried underneath layers of responsibilities, expectations, boredom, neglect or loss of connection? Do outside influences get in the way, is bad timing to blame? There are so many excuses and 'reasons'.
When I work with couples who still can recall when their relationship was alive with passion and longing for each other, I know that it is much easier to reignite their romance than if it’s a faded memory.
Driving in my car today in the autumn sunshine I heard one of my favourite songs by Al Jarreau which so beautifully expresses these sentiments for me in my life. I love it so much I’ve written them out for you. Of course they don’t sit on the page as well as they sound when AJ sings it, but you’ll get the idea.
And, if you still hold a picture of your love, I promise I can help you get it back. Just call me.
Spain
Yesterday, just a photograph of yesterday,
And all its edges folded …
And the corners faded sepia brown
And yet it's all I have
of our past love
A postscript to its ending
Brighter days
I can see such brighter days
When every song we sang is sung again
And now we know
We know this time it's for good
And we're lovers once again
And you're near me
I can remember the rain in December
The leaves are brown - on the ground
In Spain I did love and adore you
The nights filled with joy were our yesterdays
And tomorrow will bring you near me
I can recall my desire
Every reverie is on fire
And I get a picture of
all our yesterdays
Yes, today
I can say, "I get a kick every time
They play that, 'Spain," again"
I can remember the rain in December
The leaves are brown- On the ground
Our love was a Spanish fiesta
The bright lights and songs
were our joy each day
And the nights were the
heat of yearning
I can recall my desire
Every reverie is on fire
And I get a picture of all our yesterdays
Yes, today I can say,
"I get a kick everytime I see you gaze at me."
I see moments of history
Your eyes meet mine and
They dance to the melody
And we live again - As if dreaming
It doesn’t have to be a dream.
